Tier 1 Automotive Supplier Orders Batch Ovens

Image
Epcon Industrial Systems custom-designed and manufactured two batch ovens specifically for aging aluminum structural components for a Tier 1 automotive supplier. Each oven includes a multi-tiered rack system and has sufficient capability to heat 6,500 pounds of aluminum and 2,500 pounds of steel from 70°F to 400°F in under two hours while meeting the stringent temperature uniformity requirement of +/5°F. The ovens were also designed to meet CQI -9 requirements. Visit us https://epconlp.com for more information. Aluminum Parts Drying Oven Dry-off or drying ovens are a critical final step in many production processes with temperatures that can range from just above ambient up to 1000°F. Utilized across a wide range of applications, these ovens are not only useful for simple dry-off requirements for parts production, but also used for more complex moisture reduction and sterilization processes with stringent temperature and uniformity ranges. Recently, Epcon designed a drying oven as part of a larger metal finishing system for a new facility for an Aluminum parts producer. Located at the exit end of the Washline, the oven dries the parts so they are ready for the final painting and curing stages. By utilizing advanced airflow management and comprehensive heat recovery methods, Epcon’s engineers were able to maximize the overall operating thermal efficiency. Integrating the drying ovens into the comprehensive system design allows for thermal recycling and greatly reduces fuel consumpt...

Industrial Curing Ovens Designed to Reduce Energy While Providing Uniform, Quality Finishes

Image
When supplying air pollution control and process heating equipment to the metals industry, beyond meeting the stringent regulations and best manufacturing practices, equipment suppliers must develop new system designs that can keep pace with technological advancements and changing demands. As these industrial systems can have an operating lifespan of 30-plus years, it is critical to think far into the future when designing and engineering anything meant to meet tomorrow’s requirements. Ultimately, environmental impacts and long-term operating costs will be the key drivers when creating any successful systems for a metals industry application. Epcon embedded these principles into patented designs and systems engineering for two projects designed for coil coating operations so that the coil coaters would benefit from optimal process solutions. The first project was a Continuous Cure Oven System for a new laminated aluminum sheet line to be operated by a manufacturer of specialty ...

Achieving Net-Positive Operations in Adhesive Tape Manufacturing

Image
An air pollution control system designed and installed for a major tape coating line exemplifies how the best economic solution can also be the best environmental solution. As manufacturers in the adhesives sector increasingly champion their roles as environmental stewards, their focus extends beyond the monetary benefits of immediate operations such as a reduced downtime, fuel cost, and waste disposal fees. Instead, the currency of environmental , social, and governance (ESG) factors comes to the forefront, and the lasting environmental impacts that manufacturers’ decisions will have for generations become of equal or even greater importance. As more manufacturers across the adhesives and sealants industry embrace sustainable manufacturing processes, they are finding their decisions are also improving their financial bottom line. There does not need to be a trade-off, and green manufacturing is proving to be a win-win.  Tape Manufacturing Challenge A large manufacturer of ...

Various Heat-Treating Applications for the Aluminium Industry

Image
Heat treating is a critical thermal process for not only aluminum parts and products but also for the coating of aluminum sheets. Aluminum manufactured products of various sizes have been steadily replacing steel in industrial designs such as automobiles, airplanes, appliances and many more applications due to the light weight and flexibility of aluminum. Today, we are also seeing an increasing demand for affordable, lightweight, stamped metal parts, which is driving the development of specialty laminated products in coil-coating aluminum-sheet lines. Multiple Batch Aging Ovens with Guillotine Doors This article highlights two different heat-treating (annealing) systems designed for the aluminum industry. The first project features a batch-type aging oven designed for the manufacture of automotive parts. The second featured system is a curing oven with an integrated air-pollution-control system designed for coil coating laminated aluminum rolls. These systems illustrate the ch...

Best Practices in Aluminum Scrap Recycling Systems

Image
Understanding and applying best practices in aluminum scrap recycling systems is key to realizing the full potential of your recovery system. Recognizing that a 1% deviation in contaminant levels can translate to more than a 2% move in metals recovery, highlights the value in investing in the latest recovery technologies. By focusing on properly sizing and configuring the thermal oxidizer early in the design process, operators will be able to realize the full potential of the metals recovery system and avoid wasted melt furnace capacity.   At the scale of many captive recycling operations, recovering waste heat from the process can produce a significant annual cost savings and overall reduction in facility greenhouse gas emissions. Benefits of Secondary Heat Recovery A perfect example of the cost savings benefits of secondary heat recovery in aluminum scrap recycling can be found in an installation at a merchant metals recycling operation in Arkansas. The existing system...
