CEO Outlook – Q1 2025

Image
As we step into 2025, we find ourselves in a world of shifting dynamics, both politically and economically. The recent election of Donald Trump has set the stage for bold policy moves, with his administration wasting no time in implementing its agenda. One of the most immediate actions has been illegal immigration. The government has launched a large-scale deportation initiative. While some view these measures as long overdue, others express concern about the economic and social consequences that may follow. Trade policy is another area undergoing significant transformation. Tariffs have already been imposed - 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada, and 10% on Chinese goods. More are expected to follow, affecting industries across the globe. These moves have unsettled markets and raised concerns among world leaders, yet many believe Trump sees tariffs as a negotiating tool rather than a long-term economic stance. He has built his career on deal-making, and there is widespread hope t...

Check our recently published article Using  Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer’s  to Replace Flares and Treat Fugitive Emissions. Managing Director, Tasha Jamaluddin, draws on Epcon’s years of project experience handling  fugitive emissions , specifically in the hydrocarbon production and logistics industry. Featuring case studies, one from a Liquid Chemical Terminal and another from a Midstream Gathering Station, the piece outlines the benefits of utilizing an RTO as opposed to DFTO when replacing Flare technology. While  Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizers  (DFTO), also known as Afterburners, have been the most common  air pollution control  device installed to replace open flares, there are applications in which Epcon’s engineers have opted for a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) as it proved to be a more effective and efficient solution, minimizing fuel consumption while better handling variable fluctuations and higher loading for a maximum DRE of Emission...

Catalytic Thermal Oxidizer for the Emission Controls for Chemical Processing of Ethylene Oxide

Image
Catalytic Thermal Oxidizer for the Emission Controls for Chemical Processing of Ethylene Oxide The Challenge As part of a major plant expansion, a global specialty chemical producer approached Epcon to provide a cost-effective solution to effectively treat Ethylene and Ethylene Oxide emissions from their new processes. Equally as important to meeting the performance requirements was the ability to meet the tight turn-around timeline for this facility located in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Solution Working together with the plant engineers, Epcon’s experts proposed a compact and energy efficient Catalytic Thermal Oxidizer (CTO).  Leveraging Epcon’s decades of experience with Thermal Oxidation the team designed a compact L-Shaped CTO with propriety process stream, dilution and combustion air inlets, which deliverd the guaranteed destruction removal efficiency (DRE) of 99% to comply with Federal Regulations, Title 40 of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Co...

Afterburner with Quench & Scrubber for Petrochemical Operations

Image
The Challenge A leader in Latin America’s Chemical and  Petrochemical Industry  needed equipment to oxidize Hydrogen Sulphide and removal of SO 2 /SO 3 . The chemical plant generated large quantities of exhaust enriched with H 2 S, water vapor and air, which were costing the facility exorbitant amounts to properly dispose of . The company went out seeking the technical solutions and went to several  manufacturers  to locate the best possible technology. The Solution  Epcon has built several systems for Chemical companies for similar applications for removal of H 2 S and acid gases and used their prior experience to asses the appropriate technology. Epcon evaluated several technologies and decided on an Afterburner with Quench and Scrubber as the best solution for this application. Other types of oxidizers can be used, but based on their small flow and high heat release from VOC’s we chose an Afterburner. Epcon also designed and installed Quench ...

CEO’s Outlook: State of the Economy, Industry, and Epcon’s Future

Image
As we move through the final quarter of the year, the overall health of the U.S. economy remains strong, demonstrating resilience in the face of global uncertainties. Notably, inflation is nearing the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%, which is a significant achievement for the Federal Reserve, reflecting the efficacy of its monetary policies in stabilizing the economy. Economic Landscape In August, the U.S. unemployment rate came in lower than anticipated, which created uncertainty among economists and businesses alike. This unexpected data prompted concerns that a recession might be imminent, as low unemployment can sometimes signal overheating in the economy. In reaction, the stock market experienced volatility, reflecting the collective anxiety about the possibility of an economic downturn. In response to these dynamics, the Federal Reserve acted decisively by cutting interest rates by 50 basis points, exceeding the consensus expectation of a 25 basis point cut. This larger-than-expec...

CEO's Outlook and Market Update - Spring 2024 Edition

Image
As we continue to navigate through the turbulence 2024, I want to share with you an update on how Epcon Industrial Systems is positioning itself in this dynamic environment. The U S  economy remains robust, demonstrating resilience and growth amidst a challenging global backdrop. With a steady GDP growth rate of 2.5% for both 2023 and projected for 2024, and a forecast of 1.9% in 2025, the U.S. stands in stark contrast to other major economies. Europe grapples with higher inflation and economic stagnation, while China, the world’s second-largest economy, faces significant hurdles. Despite occasional positive news, the overall sentiment around China's economic recovery remains subdued. Current U.S.-China relations are strained, primarily due to leadership challenges and a lack of sustained dialogue. It's a complex period that underscores the importance of robust communication and diplomacy to forge better pathways forward. Encouragingly, key sectors of the U.S. economy, pa...

Industrial Curing Ovens Designed to Reduce Energy While Providing Uniform, Quality Finishes

Image
When supplying air pollution control and process heating equipment to the metals industry, beyond meeting the stringent regulations and best manufacturing practices, equipment suppliers must develop new system designs that can keep pace with technological advancements and changing demands. As these industrial systems can have an operating lifespan of 30-plus years, it is critical to think far into the future when designing and engineering anything meant to meet tomorrow’s requirements. Ultimately, environmental impacts and long-term operating costs will be the key drivers when creating any successful systems for a metals industry application. Epcon embedded these principles into patented designs and systems engineering for two projects designed for coil coating operations so that the coil coaters would benefit from optimal process solutions. The first project was a Continuous Cure Oven System for a new laminated aluminum sheet line to be operated by a manufacturer of specialty ...
